St. Clair County was established in 1790, before Illinois became a state, by the governor of the then Indiana Territory, Arthur St. Clair. Its present size of 674 square miles was established in 1827.
St. Clair County is located on the east side of the Mississippi River to the east of the City of St. Louis. St. Clair County is bordered by Monroe County in the southwest, Randolph County in the south, Washington and Clinton Counties in the east and Madison County on the north. The Mississippi River is its western border.
There are over 30 cities, towns and unincorporated areas that St. Clair County covers. Those communities range in size and population. Some of the larger communities are East St. Louis, Belleville, Fairview Heights, and O'Fallon Illinois. Important roads and highways for the county are Interstate 255, 55/70 and 64, US Highway 50, State Highways 3, 4, 13, 15, 111, 157, 158, 159, 151, 177 and others.
There are many attractions located in St. Clair County. Some are historical such as the Jarrot Mansion, the home of French entrepreneur Nicholas Jarrot that was built in 1807. Or Cahokia Mounds, designated as a United States National Historic Landmark which was the location of central city of the Mississippian culture sometime between A.D. 800-1400. Some are family friendly such as the two Eckert's Country Store and Farms located in Belleville and Millstadt where in season apples, pumpkins, peaches and strawberries are "pick your own". Others are sports related like the Gateway Motorsports Park which is all about auto racing! Then there are the many museums such as the Katherine Dunham Museum featuring Miss Dunham's collections of costumes, mementos and art, or the Greater St. Louis Air and Space Museum which chronicles the history of flight in the St. Louis area with memorabilia from the now long gone TWA and Ozark airlines to McDonnell Douglas space crafts and much more. Recreation opportunities abound in St. Clair County. Golf courses and city, county and state parks can be found throughout the county. The Frank Holten State Recreation Area in East St. Louis features a public golf course and two fishing and boating lakes. And Citizens Park in Belleville has a BMX bike ramp, plus picnic facilities, playgrounds and more.
