The Village of Freeburg Illinois is located in St. Clair County and is about 30 minutes southeast of Downtown St. Louis. The population of the Village of Freeburg has increased steadily over the last two decades. Several important roads are in Freeburg. Some of them are State Highway 13 or State Street, State Highway 15 or Urbanna Drive, Apple Street, High Street and many others.
The Freeburg Community Consolidated School District #70 serves the families of Freeburg. The schools are the Freeburg High School and Carl L. Barton School, a combined elementary and middle school. St. Joseph Catholic School, a private Catholic Preschool through 8th grade school, is also available to Freeburg residents.
The Freeburg Recreation Park is located next to the village and features 65 acres of parkland, a two-acre fishing lake, baseball diamonds, picnic pavilions, in-line skating and hockey rink, playgrounds, tennis courts, soccer fields and a swimming pool. A memorial to the veterans of both the World Wars can be found in the village.
The village was first platted in 1836 as the town of "Urbana". English, Irish and German immigrants came to the area because of the abundance of farmland and coal. When a post office came to the village in 1851, Urbana was changed to "Freeburg" to avoid confusion with another "Urbana" in Illinois. Freeburg was officially incorporated in 1867.
