The history of Scott Air Force Base goes back to World War I when the US Secretary of War advocated for an increase in the role that aviation played in the war effort. The site for the new base was decided in 1917 and named after Corporal Frank Scott, who died in 1912 in an airplane crash. The name honors all who died during the beginnings of military airplane flight. Throughout the last century, Scott AFB has continued to remain important to our nation's defense even as its missions have changed for each conflict we find ourselves in. In view of its long history and historical importance, thirty-six buildings on the Base are on the National Register of Historic Places.
