A wide variety of museums can be found in the Metro East. Several cities have a museum highlighting the history and heritage of their city. Maryville, Glen Carbon, Alton, Elsah and Wood River are examples of this kind of museum. Some of them are housed in historic buildings such as the Glen Carbon Heritage Museum that is housed in a 1914 renovated brick school and the Maryville Heritage Museum that is located in the old Village Hall and fire station, built in 1916. A unique example of a museum is Cahokia Mounds. The museum located there highlights the early Mississippian civilization that once lived in the area.
