St. Louis County is located to the west of the City of St. Louis. The county lies west of the Mississippi River, south of the Missouri River, east of Franklin County and north of the Meramec River and Jefferson County. The 2010 US Census put the population of St. Louis County at 998,954. The county seat is located in the city of Clayton. There are over 90 cities and towns in St. Louis County, some large, some small. Locals view St. Louis County as separate regions, almost like sub-counties. Thus, St. Louis County is "broken down" into 4 regions. North County, South County, West County and to a lesser extent Mid County (this is also sometimes called the "Central Corridor").
