The Freeburg Community Consolidated School District #70 serves the families of Freeburg. The schools are the Freeburg High School and Carl L. Barton School, a combined elementary and middle school. The village was first platted in 1836 as the town of "Urbana". English, Irish and German immigrants came to the area because of the abundance of farmland and coal. When a post office came to the village in 1851, Urbana was changed to "Freeburg" to avoid confusion with another "Urbana" in Illinois. Freeburg was officially incorporated in 1867.
