North Riverfront Neighborhood
The North Riverfront Neighborhood is located along the Mississippi River in northeastern St Louis City. The boundaries of the neighborhood are the Mississippi River on the east, Adelaide Street on the south, Broadway and Hall Street on the southwest, and the "imaginary" zip code line or Maline Creek on the north. The surrounding St. Louis City neighborhoods of North Riverfront are Baden to the west, the Near North Riverfront Neighborhood to the southeast and the Riverview Neighborhood to the north.
The neighborhood is industrial in nature with several railroad lines running through the area. There are truck driving training schools, a construction industry rental company, a salvage yard, an auto body shop, a school bus service company, a lumber and plywood company and other businesses located in the neighborhood. The St. Louis Medium Security Prison is also in the neighborhood, located on Hall Street. The US Census of 2010 states that the population of the North Riverfront Neighborhood was 937 residents, although in September 2013, a satellite map view of the area did not readily show any residential buildings.
For those residents that are living in the North Riverfront Neighborhood, they served by the St. Louis Public School District, although no district schools are located there. Nearby schools include the Bryan Hill Elementary School in the College Hill Neighborhood; the Yeatman Liddell Middle School in the O'Fallon Neighborhood; the Herzog Elementary and Nance Elementary schools in the North Pointe Neighborhood; and the Northwest Academy of Law High School, a college preparatory high school, and the Walbridge Elementary School in the Walnut Park East Neighborhood.
The Riverfront Trail runs through the neighborhood along the Mississippi riverfront. The Riverfront Trail is an 11 mile asphalt paved biking, walking, running trail that extends from the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge, located just south of Interstate 270, to the trailhead on Lewis Street at Biddle, just north of Laclede's Landing.
A historic cemeteries are located along the southern edge of the neighborhood, Bellefontaine Cemetery. The beautiful Bellefontaine Cemetery was established in 1849 and is quite large at 300 acres. The list of St. Louisans that are buried in this cemetery reads like a "Who's Who!" Those who are buried there include beer brewer Adolphus Busch, businessman Ellis Wainwright, explorer William Clark, civil engineer James Eads, cookbook author Erma S. Rombauer, architect Theodore Link, aviation pioneer Albert Bond Lambert and poet Sara Teasdale.
