Many organizations and communities in the St. Louis area have events, celebrations and observances honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., throughout the month of January with most happening on the MLK Weekend. One of the larger events that has been happening since 1969 in St. Louis is the march that occurs on the MLK Monday. The march begins at the Old Courthouse with a ceremony that includes speeches from St. Louis leaders. The participants then "march" to Powell Symphony Hall to enjoy an interfaith service and concert. Washington University has been hosting a celebration honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. since 1986. The event includes a keynote speaker, music and the "Rosa Park Award" being presented. In years past, the University of Missouri-St. Louis has had MLK events at the Touhill Performing Arts Center as have many churches, organizations and communities as well.
