St. Louis is fortunate to have many historic buildings, some of them even representing the few of its kind still remaining in America. The Old Post Office is an example of this. It is one of the two still standing federal buildings out of the many that were designed by architect Alfred B. Mullett in the Second Empire architectural style. The other remaining building is the Old Executive Office Building in Washington, D.C. The Wainwright Building is example of a "first" of its kind ever built. It was the "prototype" of the modern skyscraper and it is right here in St. Louis! Many of the buildings listed below are open to the public and some can be visited for free. Others are private residences and only can be viewed by permission. Enjoy these jewels of St. Louis!
