In 2018, Bayer acquired Monsanto and placed its North American Crop Science Division of Bayer headquarters in St. Louis. Monsanto was a worldwide company, founded in 1901 by John Francis Queeny as a pharmaceutical company. The first product the company manufactured was the artificial sweetener saccharin. When acquired, the company was focused on agricultural biotechnology and specialized in crop seeds, pesticides and herbicides and produced the well known "Roundup" herbicide. From the website: "Bayer is a Life Science company with a more than 150-year history and core competencies in the areas of health care and agriculture."
