Clark Bridge
Alton, Illinois 62002
The Clark Bridge, with 4 traffic lanes and two bike lanes, spans the Mississippi River at Alton, Illinois and is an excellent example of a "cable-stayed" bridge. Completed in 1994, it replaced the old Clark Bridge that was very dangerous to maneuver, being only two lanes wide, that had been in use since 1928. The stats on the new Clark Bridge are that it is 4,260 feet long, is made up of 8,100 tons of steel, 44,100 cubic yards of concrete, and 160 miles of cable wrapped in four acres of yellow plastic piping and it had a total price tag of $85 million.
