North Pointe Neighborhood

The North Pointe Neighborhood is located in the northwest section of the City of St. Louis. The boundaries for the neighborhood are Riverview Blvd on the southeast and east, West Florissant on the southwest and Goodfellow and the City Limits on the west and northwest. Surrounding neighborhoods are the Baden Neighborhood to the east, the Walnut Park East Neighborhood to the south and the Walnut Park West Neighborhood to the southwest. St. Louis County and the City of Jennings is to the west of North Pointe.

Libraries

Two of the 15 branch libraries of the St. Louis Public Library system are convieniently located for residents of the neighborhood. Walnut Park Branch Library on West Florissant Avenue is in the Walnut Park East Neighborhood and Baden Branch Library is on Church Road in the Baden Neighborhood.

Schools

The St. Louis Public School District, which serves the neighborhood, has two elementary schools in North Pointe, Herzog Elementary School on Pamplin Place and Nance Elementary School on Riverview Blvd. Other district schools that are nearby are the Northwest Academy of Law High School, a college preparatory high school, and Walbridge Elementary School in Walnut Park East. River Roads Lutheran School is a private elementary and middle school located in the Baden Neighborhood on Church Street.

Parks and Recreation

Of the City's 111 parks, there are several conveniently located for the residents of North Pointe which provide a wide range of recreation activities. Vivian Astra Park is a "greenspace" park with just over an acre of parkland located at Vivian and Astra that is in the North Pointe Neighborhood. Outside of the North Pointe is Walnut Park, located at Lillian and Thrush with two basketball courts and over 2 acres of parkland. One of the larger parks in the area is the 9.6 acre Dwight Davis Park in the Walnut Park East Neighborhood at Lillian and Robin. It provides a playground, a spray pool, one baseball and two softball fields, a soccer field, two tennis courts and basketball courts. The Baden Neighborhood has another large park, Hickey Park, which is just over 16 acres of parkland and provides athletic fields for softball, soccer, and football, courts for basketball and horseshoes, walking trails and a playground. There are several parks in the area that provide greenspace but no other amenities at this time.

Cemeteries and History

One might not think of cemeteries in this way, but when you visit an old one, it is like visiting history. Calvary Cemetery, located just to the southeast of North Pointe, is an historic Roman Catholic cemetery with many of the early founders and influential shapers of St. Louis interred there. The cemetery is quite large, at 400 acres, and was established in 1858 to receive the remains of those who had been buried at the cemetery located at the Old Cathedral in St. Louis. Those remains had to be moved to make way for the expansion of the city. The list of St. Louisans that are buried in Calvary, along with the Bellefontaine Cemetery that is next to it, reads like a "Who's Who!" Some of names that can be found in Calvary include many of the Chouteau family, General William Tecumseh Sherman, Dred Scott, Mickey Carroll, Tennessee Williams and John Mullanphy.
