Lebanon Missouri lies right on the original pathway of the historic Route 66. Before Route 66, there had been a gravel road from St Louis through Lebanon to Springfield Missouri. And even before that, a dirt trail that was used by Indians and settlers coming west and was called the "Wire Road" during the Civil War because the telegraph lines followed this trail.
Route 66 came through Lebanon in the late 1920's and brought many travelers taking in the sights found along the "Mother Road" from Chicago to Santa Monica. Many businesses sprang up along the road to provide those travelers with places to eat and rest for the night. One such place that opened along Route 66 in Lebanon and is still in business is the Munger Moss Motel, built and opened in 1946. Recently, two other Route 66 businesses just closed, Wrink's Market, which opened in 1949, and the Bell Restaurant that was visited by Barack Obama during his 2008 Presidential campaign.
To highlight the connection between Lebanon and Route 66, the city has a Route 66 Museum located in the Laclede County Library on Jefferson Avenue. The Museum features exhibits of daily life during the hey-day of the "Mother Road," memorabilia of Route 66 and an actual gas/service station from that time period.
Lebanon Missouri is the County Seat for Laclede County and is the location of the Laclede County Courthouse. The Laclede County Historical Society has preserved the historic Laclede County Jail that is located on the Courthouse square and serves as the Laclede County Museum. The original wing of the jail was built in 1876 and the addition was built in 1913. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Lebanon Missouri is located about 2 hours and 50 minutes southwest of Downtown St Louis via Interstate 44.
