The Great Forest Park Balloon Race is held each year in September on Central Field in Forest Park. It was founded in 1973 and has become one of the most recognized of it's kind in the country, as well as being a St. Louis tradition and a "Local Legacy".
The Friday night before the race, a "balloon glow" is held where all the balloons are inflated, tethered, and illuminated. Come early, it gets crowded, and bring your camera! It is a wonderful sight! The race is then held the following day, on Saturday, It is a fun filled day for the whole family with activities and entertainment. The race begins when the Energizer Bunny, the "hare" balloon, is launched and then the "hound" balloons are launched. The winner of the race is the balloon that drops a baggie of birdseed closest to the landed Energizer Bunny balloon.
